The Funuvits Farm

I have a number of photographs taken at this farm but unfortunately very little information. Both my father and Arthur Kemp seem to have been well treated, so much so that Dad went back to visit the family in 1950 and 1951. On the second occasion he took along my mother and me. As I was only four years old, I don't remember a thing!

Of the people who lived on the farm, I have only managed to trace Herr Funuvits' daughter, Annali, who now lives in a village not far from Bernstein. The farm was sold many years ago.

In August 2002, I returned to Bernstein with my son. With the help of Frau Berger-Almasy of Bernstein Castle we located the farm about 2 miles outside Bernstein. The years have not been kind to the farm and little remains.

We also visited Annali, now Frau Freingruber, in the town of Rechnitz, some 25 kilometers from Bernstein, close to the Hungarian border. For a whole afternoon she talked of life on the farm, stretching my knowledge of German to the limit and beyond!
